Assam HS 2018 Physics Question Paper Q.2(c):[marks=2]:  Establish the expression for current flowing through an external resistance R connected to a cell of e.m.f. E and internal resistance r.

Answer: Let i be the current flowing through the circuit.

Applying Kirchhoff’s loop law in the circuit:

+E - ir - iR = 0

=> i(R + r) = E

=> i = E/(R + r)  which is the required expression.

Assam HS 2018 Physics Question Paper Q.2(c) (or part): [marks=1+1]: State and explain Kirchhoff’s rules used for analysis of an electric circuit.

Answer: Kirchhoff’s First law (Junction Law): The algebraic sum of the currents meeting at a junction in a closed electric circuit is zero.

=>  Total incoming current = Total outgoing current.

It means, current cannot be stored in a junction. That is, no point or junction in a circuit can act as a source or sink of electric charge. Thus, Kirchhoff’s first law supports the law of conservation of charge.

KIRCHHOFF’S Second Law (Loop Law): The algebraic sum of changes in potential around any closed path of electric circuit (or closed loop) involving resistors and cells in the loop is zero.

Kirchhoff’s second law supports the law of conservation of energy.
